Village Defibrillator Installed

Village Defibrillator Installed

It’s taken a while longer than anticipated but our village defibrillator was installed yesterday in the telephone box on the village green.  The unit is being registered with the emergency services and anyone dialling 999 will be provided with the whereabouts of the defibrillator and the access code to the box where it’s kept.

It is extremely easy to use with simple picture instructions, but if you would like to attending a training evening on how to use it or have any other queries, please contact Yvette on parishclerk@barnbyinthewillows.com.

Lincoln-Newark bus 47 service restored for the time being via Barnby

Lincoln-Newark bus 47 service restored for the time being via Barnby

PC Coaches has for the time being restored the stop at Barnby-in-the-willows, on Route 47 between Lincoln and Newark.

This service is apparently currently being monitored to assess passenger numbers and the impact of the level crossing, with a view to a decision being made about its future.  It is understood that PC Coaches had previously received some funding from Nottinghamshire towards the running of this service, but funding was withdrawn due to budget cuts.  Please take a look at the poll below, no personal details are captured.

Would you commit to taking the No 47 bus to Newark or Lincoln in order to keep it via Barnby?

If you’re heading into Newark or Lincoln for a couple of hours, please consider using this service.  Not only are you helping the environment by using public transport, you’re helping to keep this service running via Barnby for the few in the village that don’t have easy access to a car and it’s much quicker than the telephone request only service via Fernwood and Balderton.

Rural Landscape Conserved as Fulbeck Wind Farm Planning Application Refused

Rural Landscape Conserved as Fulbeck Wind Farm Planning Application Refused

Some of you may have forgotten about the application that was made by Energiekontor UK Ltd for 10 x 110m wind turbines to South Kesteven District Council, back in August of 2015.  South Kesteven officially refused the application on 31st March 2017.   Energiekontor UK Ltd has 6 months to lodge an appeal.  Full details of the decision can be found by clicking <here> which will take you to the South Kesteven website.

You may have noticed the 3 wind turbines that were recently erected to the South West of Barnby near to the old refuse site at Hawton.  These turbines are 126m in height but are a little further away.  This is the same height as was originally planned for the Fulbeck airfield site, but later reduced by 16m to 110m due to radar interference objections from the nearby RAF base.

Let’s hope that Energiekontor UK Ltd decides not to appeal and we can all continue to enjoy and conserve the wonderful unspoilt rural countryside landscape we have, particuarly to the East of us here in Barnby.

Sunshine, Smiles and Spam Sandwiches at the Vintage Village Afternoon Tea

Thanks go to Lynn and all who assisted her on the Village Hall Committee, for putting on a fabulous display of 40s memorabilia and historical items, some of which were available to buy.  Even the selection of sandwiches and cakes was themed, including of course, good old corned beef and Spam!

There were some 40s dressed attendees too and with the sun shining it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon whilst raising funds for the village hall.

Barnby swan rescued and released back into the wild

Barnby swan rescued and released back into the wild

Did anyone think they spotted a man carrying a swan in his arms through the village in the New Year?  If so you weren’t mistaken!

Barnby residents Neil and Jo spotted and rescued the injured swan from the banks of the river Witham on 2nd January.

Neil recalled the event as it unfolded.  “Jo phoned the RSPCA and went on ahead to meet them at our house while I made my way back with the swan. It had an injury to its wings which resulted in a fair bit of blood loss and left it with a piece of flesh 2 inches long hanging out of the wound.  It also had a problem with its left leg.  This was more than likely caused by a wire strike.  The RSPCA took it to King’s Lynn centre and we asked if we could collect it after it had recovered and release it back on its home turf.”

After collecting the swan from the RSPCA centre at King’s Lynn and driving it back, Neil and Jo took it the final few hundred metres by wheelbarrow to the riverbank.

The release was (just about) captured on video as shown below (the swan decided not to go straight in the water!).    Thanks very much to Neil and Jo for all their efforts in rescuing and returning this protected bird, and also for sharing their story with us all on barnbyinthewillows.com.

Neil & Jo also have been told they can keep the crate as pictured below, so it’s available if anyone needs it for future wildlife rescues!
